“Shield” 2019

Kevina-Jo Smith
is the Artist in Residence at JIIAF 2019

“Shield” 2019,

Kevina-Jo Smith is a visual artist primarily working within installation and mixed media. Using found and up-cycled materials, Kevina’s large-scale pieces are often dictated by her salvaged supplies. Her practice explores the dynamics of landscape, while celebrating the traditional craft of art, through tactile and intricate artworks. With a focus on techniques and material, Kevina creates a unique visual language that addresses critical social, political and environmental issues. For Jirisan International Art Festival 2019, Kevina has weaved a large-scale protective shield over the front of the museum, made out of discarded commercial fishing cages and nets, combined with salvaged clothing that was destined for landfill.

This piece Shield was formed through a direct response to a large delivery of discarded mass-produced fashion garments and unwanted commercial fishing cages and nets. By manipulating the original form and use of each garment by hand, Kevina extends the life of each item of clothing, giving it new purpose and form.  This artwork ambiguously plays with the role of a protective shield that can be viewed throughout the Samhwasil valley. Colourful in appearance and form, this piece is far from a playful construction.  Within the weave Kevina critiques on the harmful effects of the garment and fishing industries, both environmentally and socially. By meticulously deconstructing each item, Kevina pays homage to the millions of people exploited by mass consumerism. This contemplative piece that took 6 weeks to build, weaves all of the makers, designers, weavers, silk/cotton growers, garment workers, factory workers, couriers, fisherman, shop assistants and finally consumers together into this interlinked web.  This interwoven web becomes a shield, metaphorically holding each occupant safe within it’s armour. The nature of the piece will slowly deteriorate over time with the natural elements of the surrounding landscape. This performative act of deterioration is indicative of the depletion of our planet, a result of consumer capitalism.

The piece Shield has no intention to resemble a familiar form. The seemingly random nature of up-cycled and found materials has been reduced to colour, shape and texture. Through this reconstruction, conventional representation of the original objects are shifted, the piece then opens itself to multiple readings.  The audience is invited to enjoy colour, form and composition, however with closer inspection the viewer may begin to identify the mass for what it really is. Consequently reminding the spectator that our current consumer heavy, single-use, fast fashion, disposable lifestyles are not sustainable. Shield acts as a reminder to REthink personal consumption, and inspire to REpair and REuse. The age of mass consumerism has reached its threshold, this outmoded system is on the brink of change, we must Remould!
