Cornelia Konrads is the Artist in Residence at JIIAF 2020

the Works world of Cornelia Konrads

Cornelia Konrads is the Artist in Residence at JIIAF 2020

by Holly Flitcroft

Cornelia Konrads, born in Wuppertal, Germany, studied philosophy and has worked as a freelance artist since 1998. Her interest is primarily focused on site-specific installations – indoors and outdoors, temporary and permanent.

As a passionate traveller, she has realized concepts through her various experiences of expositions, residencies and commissions in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and America. Her starting point is always a reflection of a space and it’s particularities – a close dialogue with the architecture, topography, vegetation and history of the surrounding area.

Cornelia creates states of irritating ambivalence by adding an element to the scenery, which refuses to fit into the expected order. Merged into its site it is not sure, if this element was always there, if it will stay, change or disappear in the next second. The situation often suggests an ongoing movement or unstoppable process. It can be seen like a filmstill, pointing backwards and forwards, containing past as well as the future and the whole of the film in its core.

Something doesn’t behave as it should – within the twinkling of an eye the inner monologue gets interrupted. This rupture bears a certain chance: to challenge what is supposed to be “reliable” about what we know: the laws of gravity, the solidity of walls or the ground under our feet. Cornelia’s works are produced contrary to the logic of “what the case is” – but always with a small sardonic smile.

artistic approach:

I like the image of a journey for the creation of artwork. Life is a journey and art reflects life. Literally my site specific works are always preceded – and followed – by a journey. In a certain way this journey is a part of the work. I refer to it, and I speak about aspects of travelling: passage, movement, transformation, transience.

My first approach to an unknown area is always: walking – without a certain destination. I follow the attraction of marks and constellations of the landscape, shapes, sounds, smells, tracks, light situations. During those walks I collect in my mind what lies on the edge of the path: incidents, materials, characteristics of the local architecture or vegetation  – untill I come to a place, where all this observations condense into an image.

I know, that I’ve found „my site“, when immediately three aspects come together: a clear image, I can visualise there, the technical possibilities and a sensefull relation to the informations I picked up on my way before. This is a very precise feeling. The site is not just a “background” for me, but a texture. The goal is, that my work becomes a part of this texture.

Kyu Nam Han is the Artist in Residence at JIIAF 2020

Bridging Worlds 一 the paintings of Kyu-Nam Han

Kyu Nam Han is the Artist in Residence at JIIAF 2020

by Eleanor Heartney

In a 1987 interview, Kyu-Nam Han told an American writer “l live between two worlds. My concern is global.” Born in Korea, liis youth and adolescence in Seoul were intermingled with the Korean War and the later political unrest. In 1972, at the age of 27, lie came to the United States where he studied art at Ohio State University before settling down as an artist in New York. Today he lives and works with his wife, painter Boon Ja Choi, in a spacious farm-house turned studio about ail liour outside of New York City.

This brief biography helps explain the remarkable synthesis of Western and Asian influences visible in his work. Building up layers of small geometric shapes, he creates fields of color which vibrate withui a peculiar space which is neither simply illusionary or literal. In some works, the shapes and colors begin to define landscape images on the verge of disappearance. In others they become tightly interlocked compositions whose basic, repeated motif is a simple outlined rooftop.

The brushstrokes are quick and crisp, increasing the sense of movement created by the overlapping flecks of color. This gestural quality, along with the “all over” field created by rhythmic alternations of form and color and the fracturing of images into slivers of jewel like color have lead many critics to compare Han’s work to that of various masters of Western modernism. These range from Seurat and Braque to de Kooning, Mondrian and Mark Tobey.

Han himself describes his work as a kind of “Post Abstract Expressionism,“ noting that, while the appearance of his work brings to mind those illustrious predecessors, his concerns are rather different. He is less concerned with probing the emotional depths or unlocking the secrets of the unconscious, than in evoking a nonlinear experience of space and time. Such concerns link his work with that of traditional Korean folk art and literary painting, a connection made even clear with his adoption, in some recent paint of the traditional motif of mountains and moon.

Commentators frequently compare Han’s work with the dappled color fields of Georges Seurat or the rhythmic interlocking of line and color in the work of Piet Mondrian (one painting from 1987 is in fact named “Manhattan Boogie Woogie.” They also recall the fragmented forms and splintered planes explored by artists like Paul Cezanne and George Braque.

Still, it would clearly be a mistake to interpret these works solely in terms of the modernist analysis of form and space. Going beyond cubistic fracturing, they reconstitute space as an energy field or an all enveloping ether which has little in common with most western models.

Han’s paintings demonstrate some of the possibilities which may result from the cross fertilization of cultures. Employing an innovative approach to tradition and an openness to influences across national and cultural lines, they provide a model of multicultural exploration of the most positive sort. As the world becomes smaller and the culture increasingly global, the example of Kyu-Nam Han is well worth studying. (Excerpt)
